Advocates For Autism, Inc.
Our main focus is turning this region into a true community where neurodiverse individuals have a circle of support they can depend on for a lifetime. This means more than social events — it means creating networks of friends who become family, establishing systems that provide the living supports people need, and opening civic opportunities where neurodiverse individuals can make an impact on their community. Here, people are not seen as “in the way,” but as valued contributors
whose presence strengthens the region as a whole.
Our Story:
We are parents and community members who support fellow families facing a lifelong diagnosis that has no cure. Over the past 30 years, we have heard one of the most profound and heartbreaking statements a parent can make:
“I hope I live one day longer than my child.”
That's a chilling statement to hear from a parent's mouth. But it's raw, hard truth. There is an underlying fear leads to the question that keeps families awake at night and that is, “Who will care for my child when I’m gone?”
When we first formed 31 years ago, autism prevalence was 1 in 2,500. Today, it is 1 in 29. The landscape has changed dramatically — and the need for community, connection, and lifelong support has never been greater.
As parents and community members, we cannot do this alone. We must work collaboratively to carry forward the mission and vision of the families who began this work in 1995 in the Southern Tier. Their commitment laid the foundation for a movement that continues to grow, evolve, and respond to the needs of today’s neurodiverse community.
Advocates For Autism, Inc. is a grassroots, volunteer-run organization dedicated to supporting individuals with autism and their families. The Board of Directors is composed of passionate parents, professionals, and community members, including those who are neurodiverse and who bring a wealth of experience and dedication to the mission of advocacy, education, and empowerment. Our board reflects a deep commitment to creating inclusive opportunities and fostering lifelong support for individuals with autism and their families.

Advocates For Autism, Inc. is led by Sally J. Colletti, President & CEO, a seasoned healthcare and disability‑services executive whose work has shaped Medicaid reform, autism policy, and family advocacy across New York. She has overseen more than $300 million in Medicaid Self‑Directed Services, expanded behavioral health networks across 43 counties, and held statewide leadership appointments on the NYS MISCC, Independent Living Council, and OPWDD Human Rights Council.
Sally’s advocacy has earned acknowledgment from Tyra Banks Productions and Chevrolet, reflecting her national visibility and long‑standing commitment to improving outcomes for autistic individuals and their families.
Her leadership is strengthened by a highly engaged Board of Directors and dedicated volunteers, whose expertise and commitment ensure Advocates For Autism, Inc. remains a forward‑thinking, community‑anchored organization.
